The Challenge in Salt Lake
On my first trip to Salt Lake City after my buddy Jack Savage bought the house he is currently living in, I made a HUGE mistake. His wife Elly is slender, fit and exercises daily. The first night that I was there Jack was telling me that if I woke up to an empty house it would be because they were on their morning 5 mile walk. I asked what time and said that I would also do the walk. Jack cautioned me by saying that they had been doing this every morning for a good while and it might be too tough for me. I looked at Elly and thought if she can do this so can I. Jack said, "I don't think you understand. There is a huge hill that is over a mile long at about the two mile point". I said, "If Elly can do it every day, so can I".
The next morning Jack and Elly were stretching before the walk and I took a pass because I didn't want to wear myself down before we started. Jack told me that they walked rather quickly and I said that there would be NO problem with me keeping up with Elly. Jack's Dad told me he would sit by the phone in case I needed him to come pick me up. Yeah, right!!!
We had walked about a mile and I had shin splints from Hades set in. I wasn't about to quit! Then we rounded a small curve and I saw, "The Hill". WTF!!! It went straight up and you couldn't even see the top. As we started up "The Hill" Jack and Elly pulled ahead several times with Jack walking back to check on me three times. The third time I was only about a quarter mile from the bottom. I asked him for his cell phone and called his Dad to pick me up. My shins were killing me, my heart was racing and I thought my head would explode. Jack went on and I leaned against a fire hydrant to wait for Big Jack.
Within minutes, two older ladies were walking their dogs by me, up the hill. They stopped to tell me that I looked distressed and wanted to know if I needed help. I told them the paramedic was on the way. About that time Big Jack pulled up beside me. I tucked my tail between my legs and got in the car. Jack handed me a beer and all was well. Don't ever challenge Elly! http://www.ellysavage.com/
