First Day of College
By now most of you are aware that I graduated from Morehead State University in 1977. What you may not know is that I had a full academic scholarship to Lee's Junior College in Jackson Kentucky coming out of Russell High School. This, is how I ended up in Morehead.
My parents were excited that I had received a full ride to Lee's Junior College and had my car packed and ready to go bright and early on the first morning of registration. I had not actually been there except to have dinner at the President's house one evening several months earlier. It seemed like it took me forever to drive there. It is located in the hills of Kentucky and nothing else was remotely close. When I finally got my car unloaded and went to meet with my assigned advisor, I was worn out. He handed me a piece of paper and said, "This is your schedule for the first semester". I looked at it and laughed. I was signed up for two Bible classes and a Canoe class along with English, College Algebra, Typing and Business Management. For someone who intended to have a career in Hotel-Motel Management this seemed just a little silly. I was told that the college would make out my schedule for the first year and I could pick my classes the second year. I asked if that was his final answer and he said yes.
I went to the dorm and loaded my car back up to go home. I knew my good friend Ed Phelps was going to Morehead so I thought that I would stop there for a couple of days and figure out what to tell my parents. I absolutely loved Morehead and Ed had not been assigned a roommate yet so I had a bed to sleep in. Ed kept telling me to see if my parents would let me go there before he was assigned a roommate. The next day I called home and told my Dad that I had dropped out of college before starting. When he asked where I was and I told him Morehead, he asked how I liked it there. He then asked if there was still time to register for classes. The next day my parents met me with a check to attend Morehead.
