Duck & Hiram's Big Adventure (Waltzing Matilda)
In the spring of 2000 my old buddy Hiram and I decided to go to The Big Easy for a celebration, of sorts. There are many tales that could be told from this trip. However, in this story I'll just focus on one of the six evenings we spent there. (Mostly @ Johnny White's Sports Bar)
We were sitting at the bar sipping our favorite beverages when an elderly lady named Matilda sat down beside us and started telling us how great it was to be a local in New Orleans and know all the Hot Spots that the tourists don't usually frequent. After talking to her for several hours and making a To-Do list, we offered to buy her dinner if she would take us to the best diner in New Orleans. We called a cab and off we went.
After nine years, I can no longer recall the name of the place she took us, but, it was outstanding! Without question, the best Seafood I've ever eaten. When we were finished eating it was 11:30 PM and time to take Matilda home. We got into the cab and she blurted out her address. The cabbie said, "That's a nursing home." Matilda fired back, " No it isn't, it's where I live." After a shouting match between the cabbie and Hiram, who was defending Matilda's honor, we pulled up in front of a nursing home.
She told us that the door would be locked and asked if we would walk her to the door. I complied! I rang the bell and two nurses came to the door. They said they had the police looking for her and that she had escaped that morning. What a night!
