Lifeguard At Greenbo Lake State Park-Day 1
The summer after graduating from Russell High School in 1973, I decided to change summer jobs. I had worked as a Lifeguard at Tranquilan Pool in Flatwoods, Kentucky for three summers and it was time to move on to the Big Time. I had been on two local swim teams for 11 years and thought I might make a career out of being a Lifeguard at Myrtle Beach. (until Jaws came out)
In the meantime, an opening came about at Greenbo Lake.
The Head Lifeguard, Jeff Cooksey, called me early the morning after I had applied and asked me to meet him at the "Lodge for Breakfast". Upon arrival we exchanged greetings and adjourned to the restaurant to meet and eat. Jeff spoke to all the waitresses as if they were his close family. I ordered a Pepsi along with toast and eggs. Jeff told the waitress he would just have his usual water and some extra napkins.
Jeff continued to look in every direction while he was interviewing me for the job. Then when the waitress sat my food down, Jeff stood up and walked around to several tables and picked up the leftovers on the other tables and returned to his seat. He laughed and said that he did that every morning and the staff didn't care as long as there were no complaints. Needless to say, I never ate at the Lodge with Jeff again, but I did accept the job.
