Melvin and the 57 Chevy
In 1972 my parents bought a new Toyota Mark IV for me to drive. One evening Wendell Overcash and I were cruising the streets of Flatwoods and decided to go to the Outpost to see who was hanging out. We were headed up Country Club Drive in Bellefonte when someone behind us flashed their brights and started to pass. Now this is a two lane road in a small town with NO passing. As they went by we heard a loud crash and saw an arm hanging out of the front passenger window of a 1957 orange Chevy. I asked Wendell if he thought they had hit us with a beer bottle and we both agreed.
The chase was on!!!
I floored the new Toyota while Wendell searched the back seat and floorboard. He found an empty Pepsi bottle. We knew we were in for a fight if we chucked the bottle but also thought they might be headed for the Outpost. We new we could get reinforcements there. As we got closer we could see that the car had what we now call "Boat Dock Tint" on all of the windows. Wendell prematurely flung the Pepsi bottle in front of the country club golf course. (about 2 miles from the Outpost) I was thinking, "What the heck, there's only two of them". As the Pepsi bottle seemingly flew in slow motion THROUGH the back glass of the Chevy, it slammed on the brakes and turned sideways, blocking the road. I said, "Let's get em"! We jumped out of the car and to our amazement, people kept getting out of the car until there were 5. Wendell said, "We better try to talk our way out of this", and I wholeheartedly agreed. Three came to my side and two grabbed Wendell. They were probably four years older than us and out of high school. As two of them grabbed me the driver hit me. Then a couple of cars showed and they took off as fast as they emptied out of the car.
We later found out the driver's name was Melvin Suttles from Westwood. Wendell and I, to this day still call each other Mel.
